Description

A delightful Sweet Spicy Salty Popcorn recipe balancing buttery caramel sweetness with a hint of cinnamon and cayenne pepper heat. Perfect for snack time, this popcorn is coated in a smooth, flavorful glaze and offers a satisfying crunch with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Popcorn

  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Sweet Spicy Coating

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: In a large pot over medium-high heat, heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add a few popcorn kernels and cover with a lid to test the temperature.
  2. Preheat kernels: Once the test kernels pop, indicating the oil is hot, add the remaining popcorn kernels. Cover the pot and remove it from heat for 30 seconds to allow the kernels to warm evenly.
  3. Pop the popcorn: Return the pot to the stove on medium-high heat. Cover and shake the pot occasionally to prevent burning. Continue cooking until popping slows to every few seconds.
  4. Transfer popcorn: Remove the pot from heat once most kernels are popped. Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
  5. Make the coating: In a separate saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/4 cup butter. Stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir until the mixture is smooth and the sugar dissolves completely.
  6. Add honey and vanilla: Mix in 1 tablespoon honey and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until well combined.
  7. Coat the popcorn: Pour the warm sweet-spicy mixture evenly over the popcorn. Stir thoroughly to coat all popcorn pieces.
  8. Cool and serve: Spread the coated popcorn on a baking sheet and let it cool for a few minutes to set the glaze before serving.

Notes

  • Adjust cayenne pepper quantity according to your spice tolerance.
  • Shake the pot continuously during popping to avoid burning.
  • Allow popcorn to cool completely if storing in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
  • You can substitute honey with maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
