Description

This Puff Pastry Apple Tart is a stunning and easy-to-make dessert featuring thinly sliced apples seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, all beautifully arranged on flaky puff pastry. Baked until golden and topped with a honey glaze, this tart is perfect for a cozy gathering or an elegant treat.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling

  • 3 small to medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for tossing apples)

For the Tart Base and Finishing

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing border)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional, for glazing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to get it ready for baking the tart.
  2. Prepare Apple Filling: Peel and slice the apples very thinly. In a small bowl, combine the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Toss well to coat all apple slices evenly with the spices and butter.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on top. Using a sharp knife, score a border about one inch from the edge, being careful not to cut all the way through the dough—this helps the edges puff up and contain the apple juices during baking.
  4. Dock the Pastry: Use a fork to poke holes in the center part of the pastry within the scored border. This prevents the center from puffing too much. Then brush the exposed border with the remaining 1 tablespoon melted butter for a golden finish.
  5. Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the seasoned apple slices on the puff pastry inside the scored border. You can place them in rows or a decorative pattern—close together but without overlapping too thickly to allow even cooking.
  6. Bake Tart: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, until the puff pastry edges are golden and puffed. Check at 15 minutes to monitor progress and then every 2 minutes to prevent overbaking.
  7. Glaze and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and, while still warm, gently brush the apple topping with honey. If honey is too thick, microwave it for about 15 seconds before brushing. Let the tart cool for several minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Braeburn for the best flavor and balance of sweetness.
  • Make sure to thaw the puff pastry completely before using to ensure easy handling and proper puffing during baking.
  • Scoring the border without cutting through is crucial to keep the filling contained and the edges puffed.
  • If you prefer, skip the honey glaze to reduce sweetness or replace with a dusting of powdered sugar after baking.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
