Ingredients
Scale
Potato Cake Ingredients
- 1 kg potatoes
- 200 g smoked bacon, diced
- 2 onions, peeled and grated
- 1 egg
- 100 g flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Prepare the vegetables: Peel and grate the potatoes and onions thoroughly. This creates the base texture for the potato cake.
- Mix the ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated potatoes and onions with the diced smoked bacon, egg, flour, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Heat the oil: Place a frying pan over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Allow it to heat up to ensure proper frying.
- Form and cook the cakes: Spoon portions of the potato mixture into the pan, flattening each spoonful into a cake shape with a spatula.
- Fry until golden: Cook each potato cake for about 10-15 minutes on one side until golden brown. Then carefully flip and cook the other side for an additional 10-15 minutes until equally browned and cooked through.
- Drain and serve: Remove the cooked potato cakes from the pan and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot immediately for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a crispier crust, press the potato cakes thinner before frying.
- Make sure to squeeze excess moisture from the grated potatoes to prevent sogginess.
- The smoked bacon adds a rich, savory flavor but can be omitted or substituted for a vegetarian version.
- Serve with applesauce, sour cream, or a simple salad for an authentic German experience.
