Ingredients
Scale
Hash Browns
- 4 cups frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper
Eggs
- 6 large eggs
- 60 millilitres whole milk
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper
Sausage and Toppings
- 200 grams breakfast sausage, casings removed
- 100 grams shredded cheddar cheese
- 120 millilitres salsa, mild or spicy
- 1 avocado, diced
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Cook Hash Browns: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thawed hash browns in an even layer. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook undisturbed for 5 to 7 minutes until the bottoms are golden-brown and crisp. Flip the hash browns carefully and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes. Once done, transfer the crispy hash browns to a plate and keep warm.
- Cook Sausage: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the same skillet. Add the breakfast sausage, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until browned and fully cooked through, approximately 6 to 8 minutes. Remove the cooked sausage from the skillet and keep warm.
- Scramble Eggs: In a bowl, whisk the eggs together with milk, salt, and black pepper until fully blended. Pour this mixture into the skillet over medium heat. Cook gently, stirring frequently, until the eggs are softly scrambled and cooked through. Remove from heat immediately to avoid overcooking.
- Assemble Bowls: Divide the warm hash browns evenly between four bowls. Top each with the scrambled eggs, cooked sausage, shredded cheddar cheese, and salsa. Garnish with diced avocado, sliced green onions, and chopped cilantro if using.
- Serve: Serve the assembled breakfast bowls immediately while warm, allowing the cheese to melt slightly and flavors to meld.
Notes
- You can substitute turkey sausage or a plant-based sausage for a different protein option.
- To make the bowls spicier, opt for a hot salsa or add sliced jalapeños.
- These bowls can be customized with additional toppings like sour cream or hot sauce to taste.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure the sausage and salsa are gluten-free certified.
- Store leftover components separately in airtight containers and reheat before assembling to maintain texture.
