Description

This Gingerbread Latte recipe combines rich espresso with a homemade gingerbread syrup made from maple syrup, molasses, and warming spices. Steamed milk creates a creamy, frothy latte that’s perfect for cozy mornings or festive occasions. Optional toppings of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg add a delightful finishing touch.

Ingredients

Scale

Gingerbread Syrup

  • 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1-2 teaspoons hot water, as needed to thin

Latte

  • 4 shots espresso (4 ounces or 120 milliliters)
  • 1 cup milk, dairy or non-dairy (or 1 ¼ cup for a creamier latte)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Make the gingerbread syrup: In a small bowl, stir together the maple syrup (or honey), molasses, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Add a splash of hot water to thin the mixture until it is pourable and well combined.
  2. Combine syrup with espresso: Pour the warm gingerbread syrup into the hot espresso shots and stir thoroughly until fully dissolved and blended.
  3. Steam the milk (steam wand method): Using a steam wand, submerge the tip just below the surface of the milk. Steam until the milk reaches a silky texture with a temperature of about 150 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Alternatively, froth the milk (frother method): Heat the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop until hot but not boiling. Use a handheld frother to froth the milk until foamy.
  5. Alternatively, warm and whisk milk on stovetop: Gently warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until hot and steamy. Whisk briskly to incorporate air and create some foam.
  6. Assemble the latte: Divide the espresso and gingerbread syrup mixture evenly between two mugs. Pour the steamed or frothed milk over the espresso mixture, holding back foam with a spoon if needed, then spoon the foam on top.
  7. Add toppings: Optionally, top the lattes with whipped cream and a light sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg. Festive gingerbread men sprinkles or cookies can be added for garnish.

Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of maple syrup or honey used.
  • Use dairy or any plant-based milk like almond, oat, or soy to suit dietary preferences.
  • For a creamier texture, increase the milk quantity to 1 ¼ cups.
  • Gently heat milk without boiling to avoid scorching and maintain optimal frothiness.
  • Use freshly ground espresso for the best flavor in your latte.
  • The gingerbread syrup can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • If you do not have espresso, strong brewed coffee can be used as a substitute, though flavor will vary.
