Description

This comforting French Onion Butter Rice recipe combines caramelized onions, aromatic herbs, and rich butter to create a flavorful and creamy side dish. Perfectly cooked rice is toasted and simmered in savory beef broth, then finished with Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley for a delicious twist on traditional rice dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  2. Toast the Rice: Add the rice to the saucepan with the onions and stir to coat the grains in butter. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly toasted.
  3. Simmer: Pour in the beef broth, garlic powder, and thyme. Stir well, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  4. Finish & Serve: Remove from heat and fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in Parmesan cheese if desired. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use chicken broth as a substitute for beef broth for a lighter flavor.
  • Stir the rice occasionally while toasting to prevent burning.
  • Parmesan cheese is optional but adds a rich, savory depth to the dish.
  • Ensure the onions are well caramelized for maximum flavor impact.
  • This dish pairs well with roasted meats or as a hearty vegetarian main with additional vegetables.
