Description

Delicious Rooti Farmaajo is a soft, cheesy bread perfect for sharing and enjoying with a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk and a sprinkle of coconut flakes. This recipe combines the warmth of cardamom-spiced dough with creamy Laughing Cow cheese filling, baked to golden perfection for a comforting and flavorful treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 cup Warm Whole Milk (Activates yeast)
  • 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast (Ensure freshness)
  • 1 teaspoon Cane Sugar (for activating yeast)

Dough

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour (Can use gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon Fine Sea Salt (Balances flavors)
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder (For rising)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cardamom (Optional for flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon Cane Sugar (remaining sugar for dough)
  • 1 Large Egg (Room temperature)
  • 4 tablespoons Melted Salted Butter (Can substitute with oil)
  • Oil for greasing

Filling and Topping

  • 8 wedges Laughing Cow Cheese (Soft cheese, alternatives can be used)
  • 1 cup Sweetened Condensed Milk (Adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup Unsweetened Coconut Flakes (Consider toasted for twist)
  • 1 Egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm whole milk, active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of cane sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
  2. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a larger mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, fine sea salt, baking powder, ground cardamom, and the remaining 1 teaspoon of cane sugar to ensure even distribution of flavors and leavening agents.
  3. Make Dough: Pour the foamy yeast mixture, one beaten large egg, and melted salted butter into the dry ingredients. Mix and knead gently until a sticky dough forms. Adjust flour or liquid slightly if needed to achieve a soft, pliable dough.
  4. First Rise: Lightly grease the dough surface with oil and cover the bowl with a clean cloth or plastic wrap. Place it in a warm area and allow the dough to rise for approximately 1 hour, until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch springform pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  6. Shape Dough and Add Cheese: Divide the risen dough into two halves. Roll one half into a rope and then cut into 15 equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place one wedge of Laughing Cow cheese in the center, and pinch the dough closed securely, forming little cheese-filled balls.
  7. Arrange and Second Rise: Place the stuffed dough balls evenly in the prepared pan. Cover and let them rise again for about 15 minutes until slightly puffed.
  8. Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Beat the remaining egg and brush it gently over the tops of the dough balls to promote browning. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown and the cheese is melted inside.
  9. Finish with Sweet Topping: Remove the bread from the oven and while still warm, drizzle generously with sweetened condensed milk. Sprinkle unsweetened coconut flakes over the top to add texture and a tropical flavor twist.
  10. Serve: Allow the bread to cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy as a delightful snack or dessert perfect for sharing.

Notes

  • Warm the milk appropriately; it should be around 100-110°F to activate the yeast without killing it.
  • If you prefer, you can toast the coconut flakes for extra crunch and flavor before sprinkling.
  • Using gluten-free flour in the dough will make the bread suitable for gluten-sensitive diets but may alter texture slightly.
  • The cheese filling can be substituted with other soft cheeses like cream cheese or mozzarella for different textures.
  • Ensure the dough balls are sealed properly around the cheese to prevent leakage during baking.
  • Sweetened condensed milk quantity can be adjusted based on preferred sweetness level.
  • Keep an eye on the baking time as ovens vary; bread should be golden brown but not overbaked.
