Description

Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos are a delicious fusion appetizer featuring crispy baked wonton shells filled with savory, hoisin and soy sauce-glazed chicken, fresh vegetables, and drizzled with a sweet chili sauce. Perfect for a party or a flavorful snack, these tacos blend Asian-inspired flavors with easy-to-make techniques.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Filling

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Taco Shells

  • 16 wonton wrappers
  • Cooking spray or oil for brushing

Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 1/3 cup Asian-style sweet chili sauce or sesame dressing for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare shells: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly coat both sides of each wonton wrapper with cooking spray or brush with oil, then gently press them into the cups of an upside-down muffin tin to shape taco shells.
  2. Bake wonton shells: Place the muffin tin in the oven and bake the wonton wrappers for 8 to 10 minutes until they turn golden and crisp. Remove from oven and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Cook chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the finely diced chicken and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until fully cooked.
  4. Add sauces and aromatics: Stir in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and ginger into the skillet. Continue cooking and stirring for 2 to 3 minutes until the chicken is well coated and the sauce slightly caramelizes.
  5. Finish chicken mixture: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in sliced green onions to add freshness and mild onion flavor.
  6. Assemble tacos: Fill each baked wonton shell first with shredded lettuce, then spoon in the flavorful chicken mixture. Top with shredded carrots and chopped cilantro if using.
  7. Add final touch: Drizzle each filled taco with Asian-style sweet chili sauce or your choice of sesame dressing to add a sweet and tangy finish.
  8. Serve immediately: Serve the chicken wonton tacos right away to enjoy the crispness of the shells and the vibrant flavors at their best.

Notes

  • For extra heat, add sriracha or red pepper flakes to the chicken while cooking.
  • These tacos are best assembled just before serving to maintain wonton shell crispiness.
  • You can substitute the sweet chili sauce with sesame dressing for a different flavor profile.
  • Leftover chicken can be refrigerated for up to 2 days but do not assemble tacos ahead to prevent sogginess.
